Have you checked the Decipher website recently? - 2008/05/14 10:36 With the recent talk about The Hobbit movie, i wondered if there was going to be a ccg based on it (**drool** nice little hobbitses).
So the obvious candidate who sprang to mind was Decipher, what with them developing the LotR tcg back in the day.
And lo, i decided to surf over to their website and have a wee look...

Holy Moley! Has anyone else checked this out? Anyone else even remotely into it? I dunno what to think TBH.

Re:Have you checked the Decipher website recently? - 2008/07/28 11:42 I've been getting a bit involved with Fight Klub, the spoiled card texts look very solid and strategically /tactically intricate, the community are very nice (as are the Devs), and the pre-release following for the game would suggest that it's being extremely well received and that momentum is building.

It's overly-dismissive to label the business model as a "Pyramid Scheme"... What actually happens (had you done your homework DTee!!) is that your reward for introducing new players is 10% of their purchases for life. Anyone that you have introduced are also able to invite other people, and they themselves will be eligible for 10% from these players, but you dont get a cut from these guys, or from anyone they invite etc.
So it's not a pyramid by any stretch of the imagination.

But dont just take my word for it, check it out...
It's not like there's much happening here anyway

The later you join the game the lower are your chances of getting anything out of it.

I somehow got a preview mail for the game a few months back and I checked it out. My problem with the game was mostly that their ad campaign focused almost exclusively on the business model. There was not a single shred of info about the game itself. Nothing about the mechanics, no preview pictures, nothing. Don't get me wrong - it's nice that there was a solid game behind it but back then they did not advertise a game but a way to make money...

Re:Have you checked the Decipher website recently? - 2008/07/29 06:17 Don't like the sound of any game where players are promoting it to line their own pockets, any good game players are happy to promote it for the love of the game. Introduce money into the equation, greed and whatnot make things go downhill rapidly, can ruin friendships, etc. I would never introduce a friend to a game where I could make money buy getting him to buy more.

Re:Have you checked the Decipher website recently? - 2008/07/29 09:20 There's a bit more flesh on the bones of the game mechanics, and a near-complete version of the rules and some spoiled cards (minus images), so you should maybe have another look, and this time you'll get more of a feel for the game...
What i like is the cross-genre aspect of it - although no characters have been spoiled yet, theoretically we could have fights between Terminator and Neo, The Bride and Aeon Flux, Wolverine and Tyler Durden etc. Pretty cool i think...

And i need something to get into since my favourite ccg is effectively dead, or consigned to the realms of nostalgia...

Brootal, i absolutely agree with you, but i for one will be into the whole thing for the sake of the game, not the cash. And i dont think there's that many potential local players here that the monetary aspect will be terribly significant BUT what i will be doing is feeding it back on my buddies so that they'll either get cheaper cards or free postage or such, and hopefully that will just be an added incentive for them to play.

Re:Have you checked the Decipher website recently? - 2008/08/26 06:48 There are two things about that game that I find appealing: the supposedly short playtime and the player worldmap they plan on having on the new website.

When eve started they talked about 30 minutes play time... But to my experience that was rarely the case and "The Exiled" hasn't helped much either. Granted I'm not playing a lot but you have to play a somewhat special or far superior deck to beat your opponent in under 30 mins... For normal games thats not necessarily bad but if you want to demo a game and it takes an hour that's not good... So if the fights really take about 15 minutes that's great!

And the worldmap. I think the ability to actually see how many players are in your area is damn cool. Especially in the beginning of a game it's of utmost importance to be able to find opponents to play with. Besides the few threads "Players in XYZ?" the only thing eve had was the profile "search" with categories US, Non-Us, World... So you had to browse through 20 pages to find 5 players in your country. I would have LOVED such a map...

I think that despite my initial reservations I'll try this out. I'm currently trying to promote another game in my area but the official support for it seems equally dead as for ESG... So I slowly stop caring what game I play...
