Info about Eve: Conquests (board game) - 2008/09/10 16:28 Source

White Wolf Expands Board Game Line
With Eve, WoD, Others
August 18, 2008

White Wolf is continuing to expand its board game line, with a second Exalted game, a Hunter game, and a game based on parent CCP’s Eve MMOG property all due before the end of the year. Eve: Conquests will be a big box board game with a $74.99 MSRP. The board will be 30” x 32” and “there will be lots of very hefty pieces,” designer Petur Thorarinsson told us. The game will be for two to four players, and take two to four hours to play.

“It’s got a Euro-style mechanic to it,” Thorarinsson said. “It’s very easy to learn, but has a very deep game play and a lot of strategy to it.” Thorarinsson indicated that no knowledge of the Eve universe would be necessary to play the game, and that although Eve Online players would be a natural audience for it, some gamers would undoubtedly be introduced to the Eve universe for the first time by the board game.

Re:Info about Eve: Conquests (board game) - 2008/09/11 07:53 Does it come with a special apparatus where we can transform our cards into game figures?

Re:Info about Eve: Conquests (board game) - 2008/09/11 10:04 It totally pisses me off that WW still seem to regard all things CCP (the parent company!!) as being second-hand products... as they most notably demonstrated with EtSG.

In every single spoiler blurb for the rest of the forthcoming games (i.e. the WW / WoD ones) there's a nice explanation of content and objectives ("You can be one of a number of monsters to confound the hunters... there's X gamepieces" etc

For EVE:Conquests all we know is it's a big board with chunky pieces. And what the Friar Tuck is a "Euro-playstyle"? I think that means that they'll drop it at the first opportunity despite any demonstrable success.

But cheers Hellboi for the heads-up.

Here's a decent definition of Euro-style board games. I don't agree with a number of his definitions (for instance, the first one being that they rarely take longer than an hour), but it's a fair stab.

I think Wikipedia has an even better article on Euro (or German) style games.

The fact is, depending on who's definition you pay attention to, I can't imagine the Eve board game being anything like a Euro game, so I think they're way off the mark describing it as such. It's more like a traditional war game, from what I can tell.

I, for one, am VERY excited for this game. I can't wait for its release!

Re:Info about Eve: Conquests (board game) - 2008/09/12 01:52 That sounds cool- But $70+ seems like a lot, some of my friends were trying the Battlestar Gallatica board game at GenCon, (from FASA? It was something like FASA.... Oh, it was Fantasy Flight,) and it looked pretty cool, but would take hours and hours and was expensive as well.

Whoops, it's only $39, and most people already know what BattleStar Gallatica is. (Add even tells you what's in it.)

I wonder why the price would be so high for the Eve game? Maybe the ship counters are made out of the rare metals you can mine in game. ; )

There are a ton of pieces that go into a game like this. The cost of making one is much higher than something like, say, Monopoly. Check out a game like Twilight Imperiumfor a better understanding of what the Eve board game might consist of; the price is understandable of it's anything as comprehensive as this game is.

Re:Info about Eve: Conquests (board game) - 2008/09/15 17:54 I would expect to see something about the game before I start comparing it to other games, or deciding it's worth the price tag. At the moment, all we have is unsupported marketingspeak. Given WW/CCP's recent history of, shall we say, an undersupply of honesty, that counts for LESS than nothing.

Anyone remember this classic?

Rest assured that this game will be around for a long while, just like we've always said. CCP stands behind the quality of its games, and has witnessed first-hand the power of the slow burn. A strong community is the key to the success of a game like ours, and despite the doubts of some, I think that is exactly what we have evidence of on these forums.

The Galactica game Chris references above looks interesting with some original ideas, has quite the supply of parts itself, and is about half the announced cost of the EVE board game. Given recent history, I know which I'm more interested in.

Re:Info about Eve: Conquests (board game) - 2008/09/16 01:19 I'm also skeptical, They'd want some fairly decent playing pieces for that price for me. WW doesn't exactly have my trust anymore either.

I'd class that Twilight Imperium as overpriced for it's contents, heck at the price they're asking you're up into Games Workshop's Starter Boxes.

Re:Info about Eve: Conquests (board game) - 2008/09/16 21:43 It's definitely more than 'just another board game', but from my experience I don't know I'd put it all the way into 'good'.

It's certainly a BIG game. I got into one at a con last year, and it ran a good five hours with nothing remotely resembling a resolution. To be fair there were a few new players, but the game was very, VERY cumbersome to set up and tear down. And while I will freely grant my inexperience, there were several things I encountered in that game which raised serious balance issues to my mind. Certain races especially seemed to have insanely powerful special abilities.

<shrug> As I've said, take it for what it's worth - my experience is quite limited, but that experience didn't exactly have me running down to the dealer's room to leave with a copy.

I picked up a copy of TI (and the expansion) at GenCon UK this year. The hefty price tag comes from the staggering number of miniatures and counters (in 6 colours for 6 players) that you get in the box.

I haven't played it yet to develop an informed opinion but the rules actually seem very straightforward. You pick roles (something akin to Puerto Rico or Race for the Galaxy) each turn and then commit and execute a number of action tokens. Rinse, repeat. You play on until someone hits the required number of victory points.

I've heard a lot of people say it's a long game, but I would reasonably expect that (for players who know the game) it shouldn't take more than about 6-8 hours, which is the same ballpark as something like War of the Ring or A Game of Thrones. Perhaps not a game for the faint-hearted though

Other games that might provide an analogous experience would include Galactic Emperor or the old Babylon 5 Component Game System (now OOP but very cheap on Ebay). Race of the Galaxy is more like a CCG. The new Battlestar Galatica game is actually a social game about resource/disaster management, not a conquest game, although it is perhaps the best board game I have ever seen

I'm intrigued to get my hands on the EVE game just to see how it's different and why it would be worth playing instead of any of the above...
