Cormorant vs Ambush - 2008/02/18 16:18Last weekend I was playing with my friends and we got this situation:
Cormorant warping into an enemy controlled outer region vs a Kestrel with ambush command ability activated.
Q: Can the Kestrel choose not to apply the ambush effect, or is it mandatory?

Re:Cormorant vs Ambush - 2008/02/18 17:06The description of Ambush is on the card: At the beginning of a withdraw step, choose a target attacking ship. This ship may deal 4 damage to the chosen target.)
You must choose an attacking ship but the word may means you don't have to deal damage to it.
So if a Verlator attacks your kestral you don't have to destroy it (which avoids the retaliate 2 killing the Kestral).

Why wouldn't you want to Ambush the Cormorant?
While I agree you can choose not to apply damage, I don't see why you wouldn't want to in a Cormorant vs Kestrel. You can't withdraw, the best result (Baring unmentioned news cards) is likely to be mutual destruction, if you don't ambush, it's almost guaranteed he gains the region.

Re:Cormorant vs Ambush - 2008/02/19 10:20I suspect Moisews is used to playing in a competitive environment and he's asking whether you have to remind your opponent about their ambush. The normal convention is that you don't have to remind your opponent about optional bilities like the dealing of damage within the ambush.
However, because the choose a ship is compulsory, you would have to remind your opponent about the ambush or risk a warning. Most of the Eve players I've met would remind their opponents of optional stuff too but it's less common in other CCG's.

It sounds like the smart play for the defending playing would be to choose not to deal any damage to the Catalyst and then withdraw.
I don't often get to say this, but it looks like CCP got the wording spot on. Your opponent is required to remind you about the ambush (if you forget) but you can't get shafted by having to apply the damage.
