Tips for running tournaments - 2007/07/18 21:49I'd like to run a tournament, but I could use some tips from all of you.
1. Cons usually have you sign up your event for a certain block of time. How much time should one reserve for an event like a constructed tournament? Assuming that around 12 players show up and you do 4 rounds with 2 finals, that's 6 hours just for game play. How much time do you allow for players to finish up their final rounds after time is called? How much time do you allow before and after the tournament for setup/cleanup? If a con wants you to sign up in 2 hour blocks, then 10 hours seems too much. Is 8 hours enough time?
2. If a con does not have any vendors selling EVE starters and boosters, any suggestions on how a tournament organizer can make these items available for purchase for new players wishing to enter a constructed tournament?

Re:Tips for running tournaments - 2007/07/19 06:541) IF you want to leave enough time for every round to go to Time + 2, you should allow roughly 15 minutes extra for each round. I try to be at a tourney I am running 30-45 minutes ahead of time, and generally expect the tournaments to get started about 30min late (longer for sealed deck of course).
2) You're probably out of luck unless you want to jump through a lot of hoops. Most cons, even the smaller ones, tend to have and enforce rules against selling outside of the dealer's hall.-Ryuteki, Owner of the Rules! Re:Tips for running tournaments - 2007/07/19 21:431) So 6 tournament rounds + 15 mins extra per round + 30mins late start time and 45mins prep time equals 8hrs 45mins. So a 9 or 10 hour block wouldn't be out of line.
2)So if there are no vendors there selling EVE, would you recommend holding a sealed deck type tournament and then charging to enter the tournament to reimburse me for the provided cards? Would this still go against the rules against selling outside of the dealer's hall?

Re:Tips for running tournaments - 2007/07/20 11:27If you are holding a sealed deck tournament talk to the organisers and see if they would add the cost of it to the cost of entering the tournament. That way people entering don't have to worry about paying twice, you just have to deal with one organisation to be reimbursed and will have more of an idea of how much you need to buy for the tournament. We shall seed the stars with our scions and reap that harvest.

Re:Tips for running tournaments - 2007/07/21 05:30At least in MTG Yugioh etc, packs are provided as part of an increased entry fee to prevent tampering.
