Glicko scores.... wha? - 2007/06/21 09:56 Any kind geniuses out there want to give a brief rundown on how Glicko scores work? How do they increment / decrement in relation to your tourney wins / losses?

Cheers peeps...

Re:Glicko scores.... wha? - 2007/06/21 14:26 From what I can find, it's a weighted ranking system which takes both strength of opponent and timing of wins into account. Stronger opponents give you more of a boost than weaker ones, and older results have less impact than newer.

Re:Glicko scores.... wha? - 2007/12/19 19:17 I agree,
It seems to work much like chess rankings that in each individual round, your score is recalculated, and then at each round, you chance to go up and down depends on the game results, and then the glicko total of the opponent.

So, in the holder software, and Glicko, even if you and an opponent each lost one and won two rounds, your scores could be different depending on who you played, and their score, in the previous rounds.

At least as I understand it.

Re:Glicko scores.... wha? - 2008/01/07 15:34 Buhallin and Chris are correct. While the math is beyond what most people learned in high school calculus, it boils down to this:

Your score increases with wins and decreases with losses, but the degree to which it changes is based on a comparison between your score and your opponent's. A win against a tougher opponent (one with a higher score than you) will increase your score to a greater degree than one against an inferior opponent (one with a lower score than you), while the inverse is true for losses against the same players.

The longer the time between updates to a player's score, the more it is considered to be inaccurate and weighted towards the average. This is because the system assumes that player strength is not a constant, and the less data it has to work with, the more unreliable it considers the total to be. So, defeating a superior player who has not played for several months is worth less than defeating a player of the same strength who has played recently.
