Virtual League? - 2007/10/30 07:08 An idea for feedback:

Despite running more than a few demos, I still have yet to drum up enough players in my local area to run a league. So, I'm pretty much out of luck on that one.

To date, I've held off releasing my TableTalk application - honestly, I'm still not sure the interest in this game is enough to be worth taking on the burden of maintaining it. So, here's a chance to take a shot at two birds with one stone.

I'm proposing a Virtual League, to be run using TableTalk. If there is enough interest, then I'll finally finish the manual and get it out the door. If not, well... <shrug>

Although TableTalk has several tournament-related features such as side decking, it's not going to be completely possible to enforce every rule - some of the enforcement will have to be player integrity. There will also be very strict "Accept what the system does" rules - TableTalk is still a beta application, and I'm not going to argue with people over what happens in the case of a crash or other error. Given all that, I don't know if Zack will be willing to contribute prize support for the Virtual League. If he doesn't, I will do so personally, and match everything they give out to a regular league to the best of my ability.

Game time will be something of an issue, with the potentially international nature of the Virtual League. Start times will be as early as possible US time on Saturdays. Unfortunately for the Europeans among us, I have to be awake in case something breaks.

I'm crossposting this to get the most visibility. If you would be interested in participating in this, please respond to either thread. Once we see what the response level is, I'll make a decision to press forward with this or not.

Re:Virtual League? - 2007/11/14 13:03 Sounds like a good idea. I was wondering where TableTalk was atm...

I'm in a similar situation: try teaching ESG to german speaking Yugioh-playing teens. *shrug*

Re:Virtual League? - 2007/11/14 15:20 Sounds like a nice idea for those who can't get regular games at their places. Unfortunately i won't have time to take part in it.

Re:Virtual League? - 2007/11/14 18:50 Unfortunately, it's looking like there is very little interest in this. Kempeth would make, I believe, 4

Honestly, without a user base that would struggle to break double digits, it's simply not worth the commitment for me to release TableTalk. That's unfortunate, but until White Wolf/CCP gets off their collective tails and decides to actually try and promote this game, it's just not worth the effort.

Sad.

Re:Virtual League? - 2007/11/15 09:52 Maybe we're looking at this wrong...
Perhaps if TableTop got launched then it might be what's needed to give isolated players a means of regular casual play. When that happens then interest could well snowball, and perhaps then there would be sufficient interest to get the Virtual League up and running.

I'm kinda disappointed that TableTop hasnt been put out before this - even a buggy, beta version would be far preferable than the buggy alpha versions of OCTGN and such.

If other players with a bit of coding or IT know-how (like me for instance, not forgetting Kempeth and Icewolf) would volunteer to provide support for the application, would that convince you to give TableTop a proper release? Of course it's not fair to expect you to shoulder the burden by yourself, Bu, but i reckon plenty of people would be willing to help if it meant us having a decent means of playing...

Re:Virtual League? - 2007/11/15 15:43 Maybe... It's largely ready for an open beta, and should be pretty solid. The last major piece waiting is the manual, which is always the least fun

Maybe I'll just throw it out there and see what happens. I know there are people who want to see it, and I would like to see it out there... It's just that I take the commitment of a release very seriously (moreso than White Wolf appears to do for their game, honestly), and want to make very sure that it's worth doing so. Future support help can change the equation a bit, too...

I can't promise anything until after Thanksgiving here, but maybe I'll see what I can do, and the EVE community will get a nice Christmas present

Re:Virtual League? - 2007/11/20 06:03 Have to say I'm interested to see what you've got whatever stage your up to, even if you don't intend to support it. I may be interested in the league depending on timezones, etc. Don't really care, but a small trial league without prizes would be best to start with anyway to give the product a workout, that way you don't have to worry too much how crashes influence it, etc.

As I think I've said elsewhere, I'm working on my own engine to run Eve Ccg, but I'm not promising I'll ever get there, it's a low priority project, it gets some time occasionally, but not often and it's as much about delving into the mechanics of the rules as it is about a working product.

Re:Virtual League? - 2007/11/27 03:35 This would definitely be something I would be intrested in, considering that South Houston is rapidly running out of places that even carry EVE ccg. I bought a starter at barnes and noble, and it was all they had, and I can't find anywhere else to buy, other than White Wolf. Given that, there really isn't anyone I can play against at the moment. My 7 year old brother may be smart, and can grasp the game fairly well, but not enough to be real challenge to me. Having a way to play online would be great. Re:Virtual League? - 2007/12/07 02:38 I'd definately be interested in it as a free product, if that's the intention. Paying, not so much. I play on MWS sometimes and Vassel often, with SWM. I would welcome a way to play eve, and I kind of hate the MWS setup, so would welcome a different engine for eve.

Re:Virtual League? - 2008/01/15 08:35 Any change in this?

I'm pretty proficient in Java so I could theoretically help with support and fixing/updating if TableTalk is released...

Re:Virtual League? - 2008/01/17 09:51 In dont think Bu's gonna do it. As he mentioned in other posts, no-one is very optimistic about EtSG's longevity so he doesnt want to invest the time in launching TableTop... Which i think is a shame. A dedicated means of playing online would, IMO, boost interest in the game and would have a knock-on effect in giving both this site and the community some much-needed activity and enthusiasm. ============================

Re:Virtual League? - 2008/01/17 11:06 That's sad indeed.

But maybe we can convince him to release the sourcecode so others could continue. I don't know if someone actually would but then it's at least a possibility.

Otherwise let us hope OCTGN 2 will hold it's promises...

Re:Virtual League? - 2008/01/17 16:00 I'm really sorry about this... I know I've waffled on it a lot, but in the end I just can't commit time to a product that I'm not convinced will keep going. After my comment above I did intend to release it, but I just kept finding other things to do with my time. The interest simply wasn't there.

If WW announces something firm on a new expansion, that may change. But as of this moment, I don't believe they intend to release any more sets.
