Tournament rules: Penalties - 2006/10/30 15:22 Hi all,

1st post and right away i like to address an issue with the rules:

Rule 3.5 explains the penalties you can get very briefly:

When a player breaks a rule, he or she get's a warning. If he breaks the same rule twice, he or she is disqualifies from the tournament.

Now i don't like this rule for a few different reasons:

1. A player who is quite new to the tournament scene might make the same error twice simply out of habit. I don't think you want to discourage him/her playing in tournaments by disqualifying him/her.

2. There is only 1 penalty now for all rules breaking. I think some rules are more stricter than others. If i (as a judge) notice a player intentionally cheating (drawing an extra card on purpose) i will disqualify the player right away without a warning, while if a player makes a minor mistake i might simply warn him again or give him a gameloss.

Which brings me to the solution of this problem:

Introduce 3 penalties: gamelosses, matchlosses and disqualification. There is a reason the Magic tournament scene is still having this 3 penalties as they are tested on the field for over a decade.

Maybe this is just a small issue, but i wanted to bring it up anyhow. Any other suggestions/comments?

Re:Tournament rules: Penalties - 2006/10/30 22:11 I agree that the insta-disqualification is a bit harsh; most players are still learning the fundamentals, and even the vets dont have sufficient tourney experience yet. The judge's discretion should overrule automatically getting kicked out, as ya sed...

I have tourney gripes myself, mostly about the side-decking rules which will be in effect at the Fanfest, howeverrrr i shall be ranting on about that in a separate thread - Hijack averted...

Re:Tournament rules: Penalties - 2006/10/30 23:26 Thank you for expressing your concern.

I think you are absolutely right. As I said in an earlier post tonight:

"... the current tournament rules are of course not final, but act mainly as a guideline to event organizers. I expect these rules to evolve considerably during the course of the coming weeks and months with your help."

I hope to revise the tournament rules as soon as possible; in as much collaboration with you all as possible.

Best regards,
Petur

Re:Tournament rules: Penalties - 2006/10/30 23:38 Having atleast the three tiers for rule breaking would be very good I think.

Also, in the event a 'cheat' somehow ends up going past the judges, IE, someone has 5 of a card in their deck, and even lists it with their deck, but none of the judges catch it, how would that be handled? Normally a judge will catch it, but there's always those freak accidents.
