Sealed Deck? - 2006/11/01 15:47What's the best way to run a Sealed in your local store? It seems odd to have everyone buy a double-starter-deck, but giving everyone half of the starter (ie, just one race) and two boosters could swiftly become a logistical nightmare unless the TO purchases all the decks before the tourney, which becomes a financial annoyance instead. Having everyone shell out for the $20 double-deck and choose their race probably doesn't work out all that well either, though I suppose you might not need to add boosters then. You might still want to for variety though, as IIRC the decks are completely fixed, right?
Any suggestions?-Ryuteki, Owner of the Rules! We're playing Monday evenings in IL, see www.games-plus.com for the address or email me at ryuteki AT gmail DOT com.

Re:Sealed Deck? - 2006/11/01 16:24It wouldn't be much of a problem, the way I see it, becuae you'd only ever have one extra deck if there were an odd number of players; an even number would result in no extra decks. If most players picked the same race, I guess you could come up with some orphan decks, though. My best suggestion for that would be to work out an arragement with the store whereby any remaining decks are repackaged and sold at a discount. Ideally, these extra decks could be given out as participation prizes, but the store probably wouldn't want to eat that cost.

Re:Sealed Deck? - 2006/11/01 16:29I think opening 6 boosters is the way to go with sealed deck. If you play sealed with the fixed starters and only add a couple of boosters, deckbuilding will be very simple and very boring.

Re:Sealed Deck? - 2006/11/05 23:18Let me preface this by saying that I do not play many card games to begin with, but I had an idea on this.
For a sealed start tourney: 1.) figure how many people are playing and divide the number by 2, rounding up. This is the number of starters needed. 2.) divide that number by 2 with the remainder, if present, being of the coordinator's choice of starter. This way, you end up with an even spread of decks. 3.) sort the decks by race and use a random method of handing out the decks. For example, roll a d4, then an d3 when one deck is gone, then a d2(coin) for the last two decks. As an alternative, draw different colored marbles out of a bag, one color per race and when one race's deck is out, remove that marble.
This way, everyone is treated equally, only pays for half a starter, and the TO doesn't need to spend a whole lot of money on cards either.
