eve draft - 2006/10/31 10:44 While I like the idea of the draft format but in some mind games I did with the current rules I think the whole draft is based an aweful lot on luck. While on the same side you see what your opponents are drafting.

When you lay out only one booster and go through it with 8 people with the 'ceo' just getting the 1st pick and the player right of the ceo getting 8th and 9th pick and so on ... you will have the ability to actually see and influence what your neighbours are drafting. With the ongoing flipping of cards you can be lucky and have cards that can be considered a 1st pick all the time. Even if you do a concealed draft, each player opening the booster, taking one card and then hand over the booster to the person next simultaneously you have a better chance to get a decent deck and not be so luck depended.

I really like the idea of a different aproach a lot but I think there is way to much luck involved.

Re:eve draft - 2006/10/31 12:12 The entire point of drafting is that drafting itself is tactical. For example, if you see a great card that won't fit in your deck, do you take it so no one else can have it, or do you leave it for a better card? To remove that element is to remove the essence of draft.

Also, the 'random element' of drafting is always going to be there, but you'll consistently see good draft players win drafts, like in any game. It's random, but not so much that a good player can't take what's dealt and turn it into at least a reasonable deck, generally.

Re:eve draft - 2006/10/31 13:01 Exactly and the current system prohibits tactical drafting, since a new card flipped by the next player changes the whole 'layout' of the draft table.

Re:eve draft - 2006/11/01 09:13 We are already looking into several different other drafting formats - one of which we will definitely try to squeeze into our FanFest schedule. Let me know if you want to participate

I'll post more details soon.

I don't know why, but I'm imagining something very much like a kissing booth...

Re:eve draft - 2006/11/01 13:37 Well for most games you normally get:

1) a 'sealed deck' variant where you get 1 or more starters and/or boosters and make up a deck on the spot (possibly with some rules for trading before play begins)

2) a 'sealed draft' variant where you get multiple boosters and just pick 1 card in each booster and pass it around the table

Both variants should work fine for EVE:TSG

Re:eve draft - 2006/11/01 13:42 Ok, less hijacking more on topic...

After reading the draft rules properly ( ) I have to agree with Vard here. The 'open' drafting format is kind of good, in that ir's different and could be fun, but it has serious issues; everyone sees what one guy is drafting.

Lets say for example, Im a pretty poor player, and I *really* hate Vardemis. We're playing a big draft tourney. I see him drafting Minmatar, so I draft Minmatar. I see him draft some damage-style news, so I take some too. Essentially I ruin his entire game because I dislike him. That alone is enough reason for public draft to be not used.

Then of course you have the issues of tactical drafting. In normal 'closed' draft where you pass boosters around a table in some manner, at least you dont know who is taking what. In this format, you can actively target another player by drafting cards he seems to be picking. This doesnt sound too bad if you've never drafted before, but once you've played a few drafts and realise how impossible it is to go back once you've already commited to a certain style of deck (due to the limited card pool) you can see how much of a nightmare it could be.

I hate to sound like Im shooting down ideas left right and centre; from both this and the classic format I can see that the designers are trying to go with some slightly different/new tournament formats, and I feel like Im being nothing but negative. This style of draft certainly is different and could be a lot of fun. But in anything short of a 'fun' tournament, this style of draft has some issues I think.
