Re:Green Bay WI ESQ Qualifier 4/14/07 - 2007/04/12 22:28 OK, so that's a confirmation of 2pm then? I emailed you this week when I noticed (all communiction before now including a direct email from you stated Noon start, arrive earlier for registration).

It's a long drive, I'd be really POd if I were late due to a miscommunication, but it's awfully early to be waking up if I don't need to make it by noon. Sadly, this change is also going to screw up my dinner plans in Milwaukee...

Re:Green Bay WI ESQ Qualifier 4/14/07 - 2007/04/12 22:37 A noon start will be an issue with Draft weekend here on the Green Bay Packer Strip hence the 2PM offical start time. Getting to the shop between 11 AM and noon may be tough.

Plus this gives everyone time to do deck lists (yes they are mandatory) play a few games, get comfortable etc. If you need info, directions, a place to stay etc. give us a call at (920) 499-4263

Re:Green Bay WI ESQ Qualifier 4/14/07 - 2007/04/13 02:10 Changing it _today_ is awfully late, though, don't you think? Everywhere on the Eve site up until now it's said noon.

I don't expect to change anyone's mind, I just wanted to point out that we emailed you about our intention of coming weeks ago, and got confirmation from Paula that "We are planning on starting the game at NOON so please arrive early enough to register."

It's much better to stick with a plan once you set it in stone, unless it's HORRIBLY impossible to accomplish.

Re:Green Bay WI ESQ Qualifier 4/14/07 - 2007/04/13 15:17 Whatever time kick-off's at, good luck to all attending and i hope yous have a load of fun. Cant wait to hear back about all the goings-on. Great to hear that decklists are mandatory because that will facilitate the decks getting posted here for our perusal.

All the best everyone!!!

Eh?

I'm familiar with the Cliffs of Dover (which is a particularly well-done song played by Eric Johnson), but I'm unaware of any other Dover influence on my playgroup.

...huh?

Re:Green Bay WI ESG Qualifier 4/14/07 - 2007/04/18 20:39 On Saturday the 14th of April, a small expedition started out from the Chicago area, headed to the ESG North American Qualifier Tournament in Green Bay, WI. With us we brought one player from each faction, which we referred to as a “tourney in a box.”

The tourney had been slated for noon for several weeks, but enemy Green Bay Packers activity required Gnome Games to reschedule for 2pm. Undeterred, we used this opportunity to stop off in Milwaukee to visit a friend and have some brunch.

The four of us pulled into Green Bay around 1:15 (or so the sign said, we saw no sign of an actual city, just some residential neighborhoods and a couple water towers). We were pleasantly surprised by Gnome Games though, it was a pleasant store with plenty of seating for the multiple tournaments they were running, and I understand that they also have overflow tournament space in a second building next door.

I spent some time talking with Pat of Gnome Games while people worked on their deck lists, and discovered that in addition to the other EVE players we were going to have a handful of new players who had either played at Gen Con and decided to get back in for this tourney, or who had heard about it at the store, asked for a demo and decided to try their luck with modified starter decks. I sought out a couple of them and tossed some of my extra cards their way so they would have a few more options, and be more likely to continue playing after the tourney.

We started fairly close to the 2pm stated time (I was helping one fellow build his first deck as we came down to time), and we dived right in! We played 4 rounds of best-of-three Swiss… or was it 5? I lose track, it was all a blur of dead Amarr! I think that half of the field was playing Amarr, I was playing Gallante and didn’t actually manage to play a non-Amarr deck until the finals! I'm pretty sure it was 4 rounds, actually. I went undefeated into the finals with my Gallante Rush deck (is it really a Rush deck if you’re attacking with a Destroyer?), occasionally surprising people with my Win or Die Turn-Three Cormorant Rush, but usually just overwhelming them and stealing the ISK they planned to counter my news with – I love my Enthrallment tower. I also happily managed to not once play someone from my home playgroup during the swiss rounds, though only two of us made it into the top 4 (one more nearly squeeked in but didn't make it on Strength of Schedule). We discovered two great things about the final 4 though – first, every race was represented… and second, the Amarr deck was one of the previously-mentioned modified starters!

We played the final four as people started to filter out for dinner (I ended up not getting any trades in at all which was my one disappointment, but considering I was in the finals and won a fair chunk of boosters I can’t really complain). After a tense round, the final 2 were determined: Myself and my wife Noel. The good news was, this meant that we got the top 2 slots. The bad news was, Noel never loses to me in tournament no matter how many times I beat her in practice! It’s true, ask anyone! We played a fast set of 3 games that were nonetheless very close – she won one, I won one, and then I got my perfect draw in the third game… as did she, and she went first that game. It was uncanny! It couldn’t have come closer though, and was still a good end to the day. We came home with $250 (though $70 of that went to gas and food), a box of boosters, some nifty metal ISK tokens and the new Concord promos, along with some shirts coming in the mail.

I want to thank the guys up at Gnome Games in Green Bay WI for hosting and promoting, and for being all-around good people. I’m considering heading up that way again one of these days, and that’s saying something when they are 3 hours away!
