Tournament Software Tutorial - 2007/06/01 17:22 This is a basic tutorial for Agents who need help using EVE’s tournament software, the Holder. It will take you from installation, through running your first tournament, to submitting results back to the Organized Play Coordinator.

1. Download the executable from the Agent Resources page. Please note the program requires a Windows PC that is already running the .Net Framework, which can be downloaded here. Simply follow the onscreen instructions provided by the .Net Installer. Once it is fully installed, you will be able to run The Holder executable.

2. Open The Holder and click on the “New Tournament” button at the bottom of the window.

3. Enter the name of the tournament and its format (constructed, limited, etc.). Unless you have a desire to restrict the number of rounds to a specific number, go ahead and leave it set to “Auto.” For tournaments with up to twelve people, the number of finalists should be set to “Top 2.” Larger tournaments should scale up as necessary. Finally, fill in the date and location of the event, along with any notes you want to pass along to the O.P. Coordinator, including the names of players who haven’t yet registered on the website.

4. Fill in each player’s forum nickname and full name. Make sure each player’s forum ID is entered exactly as it appears on the forums. Players without an entry in the database should register on the forums before entering the tournament. If they are unable to register beforehand, have them fill out the signup sheet found in the Agent Resources. Please note any new players in the Comments section of the tournament.

5. Once all players are registered, click on the “Round 1” tab, and click the “Create Games…” button at the bottom of the window to randomly assign seating for each player. To assign scores to players who have completed a match, select the dropdown menu next to their pairing and click on the outcome that matches their final score. Repeat this until all pairings have been scored, then proceed onto Round 2. Click the “Create Games…” button under this tab and repeat the scoring process.

6. Continue to score each match of each round, until the end of the tournament. Once the event is complete, please double check that all information is accurate, and then click the “Export Tournament…” button. This will save the tournament information as an XML file in a location of your choosing. After saving the file, you should then send it to zack@ccpgames.com as an attachement. After verifying the information in the file, AgentZero will then upload the information to the player database, updating the Glicko scores of everyone involved.

7. To see the outcome of a completed tournament, check the event archives. If an event’s XML file has been submitted and processed, you will be able to see the results under its entry.

Thoughts on the software. - 2007/07/13 19:39 Possible bug: I click on the "Tournaments" label on the left, then on the "New Tournament" button at the bottom, and enter a name for my tournament. Now anytime I click on the "Tournaments" label on the left, the name of my new tournament in the grid is listed as "[New Tournament]". Restarting the app fixes this.

I should be prevented from changing the number of rounds, if it would result in removing rounds where scores have been entered.

If scores have been entered in a final round, I should be prevented from changing the number of rounds.

I should be prevented from changing the "Finals" drop down if it would result in removing final rounds where scores have been entered.

If scores have been entered in the final round, indicate that the tournament is over in the tree-view and the grid-view, perhaps by turning the tournament name green. One computer may be tracking multiple tournaments at once, so a quick view of which ones are still in progress would be nice.

When I've selected the "Tournaments" tab at the top, it would be nice if double-clicking on either the tournament name in the tree-view on the left or double-clicking the row select tab on the grid, took me to the detail view for that tournament.

I can only edit the time of the tournament in the grid view, not the detail view.

Selecting "auto" for the number of rounds and then having that dropdown change to the auto calculated number is a bit strange. How bout an "auto" checkbox which, when checked, disables the rounds dropdown. The actual number of rounds could then be shown next to the dropdown, where the auto/manual text now appears.

An integrated round timer would be useful, again, allowing for multiple timers to be running, one for each tournament.

An end time field for the tournament might be useful for me to go back and see how long tournaments usually take me to run.

Tooltips on the Active, Op. Re.%, P.W.% and Op. W.% column headers would be helpful to explain what those are.

Links to the agent resources, tournament rules and the eve-ccg website might be helpful as well.

Some F1 help would be useful as well.

Thanks for this software! It makes the job much easier!

Re:Tournament Software Tutorial - 2007/07/13 23:30 Definitely agreed that an integrated countdown timer would be desirable and useful.

Also, one thing to add to the tutorial: If a player drops out mid-tournament, just go back to the "players" section and uncheck the "active" box by that player's name before creating pairings for the next round. I figure this will be obvious to some and arcane to others, but worth mentioning anyway.

Re:Tournament Software Tutorial - 2007/07/14 01:52 Aha! That helps, I couldn't figure out what that was for. Can you just delete them instead, or would that screw up things? Anyone know if it is possible for someone to start in a round other than round 1?

I would think that deleting them would screw up the rounds that they had already played. I don't recommend trying it during a real tournament, but feel free to plug in some numbers in a fake tourney and find out.

As far as starting later, I imagine it should be possible from the way I've seen the software behave. I'm not sure I'd want to allow it though.
