Re:Angel Impaler timing - 2007/09/17 16:50 Interesting, I missed the thread on the Basilisk's ability.

So, a Basilisk can target ITSELF with it's own ability!? ROFL (and it's not even dated 1st April)

No wonder this game is in such a mess :/

It was more about the word Next. That could be interpreted as it can only be used to prevent 1 pt of damage out of how many was come towards a ship, e.g. 6 pts of damage would be reduced to 5 or 10 to 9, etc. Not what was meant at all but that's sloppy wording for you.

Re:Angel Impaler timing - 2007/09/18 14:26 "prevent the next 1 damage that would be dealt to ..."

This implies a FUTURE event i.e to prevent damage that, as yet, may not even have been targeted. This is akin to the ship extending shields around a target and escorting it.

"prevent 1 damage that would be dealt to ..."

This implies an IMMEDIATE event, i.e to prevent damage that is being dealt and does not protect against a future event. This is akin to steering your ship into the path of incoming gunfire.

BOTH of them imply being able to prevent multiple damage by invoking the ability several times.

It's not sloppy wording, IMO.
Still, i get coniptions when i think about Basilisk being able to target itself...and BTED being errata'd...and why Angel Impaler's ability is being discussed so much yet the "nasty looking" Angel Haunter, which has a very similar mechanic, seems to have been accepted as "OK" in that respect.

*shrug*

Re:Angel Impaler timing - 2007/09/18 16:06 You're right about there being a bit of an issue with the Haunter, in that by the time its ability can trigger, the enemy ship would be on the scrapheap. Short of rewinding you couldn't do an "instead of". The Impaler was what got my attention, but I think by this point we can extend the same timing issue to any abilities which trigger on destruction.

I'm only seeing a couple of small, not overly threatening ones, you hiding some? show us the worms.

Here is a rather unexpected and plausible outcome (something similar came up in a game on Sunday).

Narrow Escape is played on an Inquistor (retaliate 2) which is then destroyed by an Augoror (card draw).

The Impaler ruling means the Inquistor goes on the scraphead before returning to dock so both it's retaliate ability and the Augoror's text trigger.

I'm fine with that but I really wouldn't want to be the one explaining it to new players.

Re:Angel Impaler timing - 2007/09/26 14:38 Guess we should call them resurrection cards. "Yup, you died but we brought you and your ship back dude."

Here's another one for you all then. Ship with character takes lethal damage. Player plays narrow escape. Ship and character go to scrapheap. Ship comes back into play. What happens to the character?

I think that narrow escape and Angel Impaler should happen just before they take the damage that has been targetted on them. As for Angel Haunter I would say that the wording should be "If Angel Haunter inflict damage that would destroy a frigite that damage is reduced to 0 and the ship put in the Angle Haunter controllers dock instead and under his control until the end of the game."

Re:Angel Impaler timing - 2007/09/26 14:52 You can't really have "under his control until the end of game" as there are ways to gain control of ships and this wording would forbid that.

I think a lot of confusion has arisen because of this "put it onto the scrapheap and then take it back out again" idea, which in my mind is ludicrous. It's a lot easier to simply doing what the cards say.

Re:Angel Impaler timing - 2007/09/26 16:12 Steve brings up a good point - if the "salvation" cards actually let the card hit the scrapheap before saving it (e.g. Narrow Escape), then any News which targeted the ship would lose the target.
