When a ship with a pilot leaves play, the characters’s owner may pay its clone cost...
You can only clone a pilot, and even then only when the ship they are on leaves play. Anything that causes the character themselves to leave play, including sacrificing that character, doesn't give you the opportunity to clone.
And just because I've been harsh on wording lately, credit where it's due: Very well-written rule that avoids problems!

Re:Brynn Jerdola - come into play? - 2007/09/08 07:25What Buhallin said. Also, if you prevent a card from being sacrificed, you have usually prevented the sacrifice cost from being paid, and therefore prevented the ability from activating. There is one card that allows you to pay ISK to satisfy a sacrifice cost instead of sacrificing the card, but that cost-payment ability is expressly part of the card.-Ryuteki, Owner of the Rules!
