Side Decking Starbases - 2007/10/23 21:49 Hey there,
It's my understanding that you can not put a different starbase in your sidedeck.

I can understand that most folks wouldn't want to change out their starbases between games, as hopefully your deck is designed to work with your starbase.
But I could think of some situations where after getting pounded the first game, being able to swap out your starbase for one of the new 'control two outer regions' bases might give you a chance in the next game.

Thoughts?

Re:Side Decking Starbases - 2007/10/24 04:47 While i can see why you may want to do this, i don't think it would be a good idea from a tournament point of view.

Essentially, having a pre-constructed deck with a few "tweaks" in your side-deck is in keeping with the spirit of the game (whatever your personal opinion on side-decks).

Having a second starbase and, of course, a "deck" (play deck and side-deck) that is designed to make the most of playing EITHER starbase is , in essence, the equivalent of building TWO decks.

In a tournament you are faced with opponents (and their decks) and as you progress you are likely to gather information regarding other player's decks. while this, in and of itself is not generally regarded as cheating, i think there would be some controversy if you were to choose which starbase to play depending on your opponent - this would not be a test of your skill as either a player, or as a deck designer, but more a test of your intelligence gathering abilities.

One possible way round this would be to have players carefully guard their decks against observation - the only way to achieve this would be to play behind closed doors, in which case you may as well turn away the audience at the door and conduct the entire tournament by email.

so, basically, what may seem like a good idea, and all credit to you for thinking about how the game might develop, would, unless carefully managed, actually kill the game.

casual play, on the other hand, is always up to individuals and "house rules" can be used.

This, of course, is only MY opinion

It's almost 6:00am and i've been up all night (again) so i hope this made sense

Re:Side Decking Starbases - 2007/10/24 05:45 It's a good skill check - gathering of information.
But I agreed with Snooby. Side-deck is way to extend exist strategy, or shift little to another strategy, or surprise opponent by counters. But it isn't a way to change a core of the deck. Flexibility of the deck must be limited, otherwise, deckbuilding and tactics will become less important.
Say what you think. Think what you say.

Re:Side Decking Starbases - 2007/10/24 06:32 There is also the other problem in that the starbase cards themselves have different backs to regular cards.
