Highlander format? - 2007/12/11 18:58I've noticed that in the few tournaments I've played to date, there's quite a big disparity in the types of decks that you see - i.e. it's kinda polarised between those who take it seriously and have load of cards, and those who don't take it so seriously or who are just starting out. It also seems that the 'best' decks are also usually the most boring, as they're exclusively focused on income generation and a swift and efficient kill. I can't help wonder if this kind of more competitive play might inadvertently keep some people away from attending events.
I notice that a lot of other CCGs that have smaller player bases opt for a 'highlander' format for their events to help level the playing field and make it more challenging. In the 'highlander' format there is a 1-card limit such that every deck cannot have any duplicates - i.e. every card in the deck must be different. I wonder how viable this format would be for EVE:TSG and whether anyone would be interested in trying it and reporting back their experiences? And if it sounds like a good idea, maybe lobby to add it as a sanctioned format for official events in 2008?

Re:Highlander format? - 2007/12/11 20:28Another possibility: Only allow one of any given location to be played into a given region. This would solve most of the degenerate income engines, and force players to do more with their outer regions than just count them for Tourist Resort.
<shrug> Not sure what it would do to the meta overall, but it would encourage both expanded play and more variety, at least for income purposes.

Re:Highlander format? - 2007/12/11 20:33You know, Highlander would be a refreshing change. The occasional sanctioned highlander tournament, like limited tornaments, would offer a more laid-back attitude.
Also lets people play with a number of cards that usually aren't seen, and keeps people with 4xEverything from taking too much limelight.
I like this idea... and have some interesting deck ideas, now. Thanks for bringing it up.

Re: Highlander format? - 2007/12/12 15:13That does sound like an interesting idea, though I can't help but think of one small negative aspect:
In VS they have a keyword called Insanity, and if you have a card whick uses insanity, then your opponent can verify that your deck only has one copy of each card in it, aka no multiples. http://vs.tcgplayer.com/db/article.asp?id=2398
So, the negative aspect would be that the VS players and I will keep wanting to call the format "Insanity" ; )
But I think I could get past that and run an event geared to that in 2008. It sure would cut down on dreaded Iteron decks!

Re:Highlander format? - 2007/12/12 16:04If you guys want to set it up, I'll support it. Variant tournaments won't affect Glicko scores, but anyone organizing an EVE event is welcome to at least the standard prize support.Zack Walters EVE: The Second Genesis Organized Play Coordinator White Wolf | CCP North America

Re:Highlander format? - 2007/12/13 14:06I'd wait for for a couple more sets to come out before running Highlander. You need a pretty broad range of cards for this to work well and have reasonable variety in the types of decks people can build. We shall seed the stars with our scions and reap that harvest.

Highlander formats were popular in Vs* before the Insanity keyword was introduced and in other games long before Vs. The term comes from the immortal line "there can be only one".
There are enough good multi-race ships in Exiled for the format to work well. The hardest part would be getting a coherent income engine going but having to resort to using all four scout ships is part of the fun...

Re:Highlander format? - 2008/01/05 12:28Was introduced to the format in Warlord. It was a lot of fun and challenging. Certainly gave me a chance to be more competative against players with multiple copies of every card.We shall seed the stars with our scions and reap that harvest.
