Does This Combo work??? - 2008/01/11 20:11Home Guard(structure) When Home Guard comes into play you may search your market for a ship, pay its printed price, put it in your home region and shuffle your market. It gains Sentry (This ship cannot attack) for as long as it stays in play. Home Guard cannot leave play.
Mind Clash(news) Target starbase structure loses its abilities (it still yields income and shield bonuses). When Mind clash leaves play, draw a card
Would playing mind clash on Home Guard allow the ship you searched for to attack???
I'm struggling with the "for as long as it stays in play" part. This leads me to believe that no matter what you do to Home Guard the "searched ship" will still have Sentry.
Thoughts???

Re:Does This Combo work??? - 2008/01/13 03:33The core of the question is whether Home Guard has an instant effect which grants the ship Sentry and then is done, or whether it has a continuous effect which gives the ship Sentry.
Honestly, I don't think there's enough information to say either way. The closest I can get is that the text is all one paragraph, which begins with the "When Home Guard comes into play..." trigger. So, I'd associate Sentry with that text, and call it a triggered ability which goes off then vanishes, leaving the ship with Sentry and the ability out of play. At that point, there's not really any active ability for Mind Clash to make it lose.

Re:Does This Combo work??? - 2008/01/13 04:32When Mind Clash is played, the ship is already in play and has the sentry ability, mind clash does not affect this, the when comes into play ability has already resolved and is unaffected. You would not roll back any isk you had collected with a moon harvester in prior turns if you mind clashed it, similar philosophy.

What you *can* do is Mastermind the homeguard ships with themself... That way they would loose their sentry...

Re:Does This Combo work??? - 2008/01/15 12:15I'd agree this doesn't work. Home Guard would need to say the ship "has sentry" rather than "gains sentry" for this to be a continuous modifier.

I think the designers intended Mastermind to be played that way, Home Guard would be a bit weak without it.
