I am sure this question was already post many times but i want to be sure.
Situation :
Me : Home Region with total defense 10 and 5 ships (5x 2/2)
Enemy : Attack with 5 ships with total power greater than 10 (5x 3/2)
1/ Does my enemy have to kill my ships before to deal damage to my starbase ? No, but most of the time there is no advantage to not targeting your ships. There are exceptions.
2/ Could he target my starbase directly and then destroy it ? They attack your starbase after you go through a round of combat. So if you can kill off enough of their ships to bring their damage down below 10 you will have successfully defended your starbase.
3/ in that case, What are the role of defending ships in home region if they do not have ambush/patrol command ? This is where defending it comes in to play. Many times just being able to remove one ship from the attacking force can bring your opponents attack power to below your starbase defense. Always be careful of your opponents ships special powers. It is always painful when your defending frigate was the reason your opponent recieved the +1 power and that is what kills you.

so you go through the begin battle, withdraw, targeting, and damage dealing steps as per normal, ship vs ship combat only.
When you get to the results step, the attacker then deals his damage to the starbase.
note the only exception to normal is kamikaze ships can use their ability to deal damage to the starbase before other combat occurs.

Re:Attack and Defense (Home Region) - 2008/01/09 08:18Ok so there is combat between all different ships in the region and then at end of battle ships combat, attacker's ship deals damage to my starbase even if i have some ship alive ?
Is there a new battle step as long as defender has ship in his home region ? I mean during the same turn ? Does Attacker have to kill all defender's ships before to deal damage to the starbase ?

Re:Attack and Defense (Home Region) - 2008/01/09 12:55Yes, when attacking a home region, all attacking ships that are still in the region at the result step (after the damage dealing step) deal their damage to the starbase.
If it's less, than starbase shield, and at least one defending ship has left the battle during this battle phase, start a new battle phase. If this was the last defending ship, the attacker still starts a new battle phase in this region and may use it to withdraw (if damage, dealed to starbase less, than its shield again).Say what you think. Think what you say.

Correct. Ships never actually Target the starbase. They target other ships, go through a damage-dealing phase, then all attacking ships get a free shot at the starbase, whether or not they fired at defending ships. If the attacker has combined power in attacking ships equal to the starbase shields, the attacker immediately destroys the starbase (and wins).-Ryuteki, Owner of the Rules!
