Running an EVE limited Booster Draft Tournament - 2008/04/01 21:24 Greetings all,
This Sunday we are running our first Draft tournament.
We plan to do the following, but are open to suggestions.

-Each player starts with 2 core packs and 2 exile booster packs.
-Each player rolls a die to determine seating arrangement. (We'll try to fill out tables with 4 folks, so if we have 8, we'll have two tables of 4 for drafting. But if we have 6, we'll do 3 and 3 I guess....)
-Each player opens a booster, selects one card, and passes left, repeat until cards in the booster is gone.
-Repeat with the next booster, and pass right.
-Repeat, left.
-Repeat, right.

We will have a seperate pile of starbases set out on the table, from outside of the drafting pool. Players will be able to choose their starbase, so they don't have to select those cards during the draft. (Although they may end up with some anyway.)

Now, we are planning to be flexible with the rules in that you have the option of playing outer regions. Aka, you can choose to pick one as you are drafting, or you can choose not to, if you don't wish to play with any outer regions.
So, your deck could have 0, 1, 2 or 3 outer regions. (Course, if you choose not to play with outer regions, you run a risk that your opponent might play a starbase with an outer region attack requirement.)

We'll be making 40 card decks, with an optional 13 card sidebar. (out of each players pool of 60 cards.)
If you get decked, you reshuffle you scrap heap as your new library.

Suggestions?

Chris
Event is on Sunday the 6th in Fairfax, VA. More info can be found in the events section.

Re:Running an EVE limited Booster Draft Tournament - 2008/04/01 23:16 4 should be ok for a draft, but personally I think 3 is a little small, if you had 6, I'd just run one table of 6. I would probably even keep it one table for 8 players, the less times a deck comes back to you, the more thinking you have to do drafting.

One thing I've done with my play group is when we opened our booster we immediately threw the region/starbase into a pile in the middle. Once we finished the regular draft we drafted the regions out in their own draft (I think with 4 packs you should have enough for 3 regions each), we let every player play with any starbase from outside the draft however, because these can be a bit troublesome to find the right race in a draft environment.

If you get decked, you reshuffle you scrap heap as your new library.
Any particular reason for doing this? I don't think decking your opponent is a viable strategy in eve yet, and if games are not over quickly they tend to go on for long enough as is.

With 40 card draft (or sealed) decks I have seen folks run out of cards. (Only twice, now that I think about it) but I don't want folks to be penalized because of playing with a 40 card deck.
Also, I don't think the rule would allow anyone to take advantage of it.

I wouldn't do that. Decking/Milling is an interesting win condition and should not be dismissed so readily. Also recycling your scrapheap rebalances a lot of other aspects: Killing cards is less of an issue and the games will get even longer.

The separate pile of starbases and outer regions is a great idea. If you provide enough for everyone that way then just have them put aside region cards at the beginning of the draft. No point in including them if you don't need to...

Re:Running an EVE limited Booster Draft Tournament - 2008/04/02 23:49 I agree I wouldn't do that, You need to control your deck, milling is not that big an issue in Eve, even less so in a draft, as people are not going to focus on drafting a milling deck given how few cards there are. Most of the issue will be players decking themselves, and that's something that should have consequences, eve already allows you to skip income to draw an extra card, if you want to burn through your deck to find a solution to your opponent, there has to be a risk, that risk is decking yourself.

If players have run through their whole deck and not found a solution to their opponent, it's unlikely what's in their graveyard will help, or if it does you're giving the player decking themselves the quickest a big advantage.

Re:Running an EVE limited Booster Draft Tournament - 2008/04/03 14:30 I agree too.
Furthermore, is 40 cards mini the right number ?
In fact, the typical number is 2/3 or 70% of the stardard format in classic CGG drafts (VTES, Magic...). It could be 35 (or 36) so. Less cards, but more quality.

Your opinion about that, if you have tested the format, has a lot of interest for me. What is your favorite number of boosters too and why ?

Thx

Re:Running an EVE limited Booster Draft Tournament - 2008/04/04 20:15 Oh,
And for how I came up with 40 cards for the min deck size, that's in the Tournament rules section. ; )
