Calling all diehards , noobs and Usual Suspects... - 2008/04/17 12:41It occurred to me that now we have at least three dedicated methods for online play (not counting webcam games), and so I was wondering if there would be any interested parties in some organised play, like a mini-league or such. I know this idea was put forward a while ago, but the implementation seemed to depend on two things: 1) Buhallin launching a viable version of TableTop, and 2) The online league attracting the same level of prize support from CCP/WW as offline leagues.
For whatever reason, the whole idea died on it's feet, but i seem to remember that we had at least 8 potential players. Since then there's been a couple of other people expressing an interest in getting a few games in via t'internet.
Each of the applications for playing EtSG online (Archanist, Lackey and OCTGN) all seem to have their pro's and con's, and each player has their own personal preference which might not match that of any given opponent. BUT, if we can aim to compromise then I'm sure that it's perfectly feasible to get a few games going.
Fair enuff, there WONT be any prizes, there WILL probably be issues with players in vastly different time-zones and there definitely WILL be a lot of griping such as "Ughh! OCTGN!! I'd rather poke my eyeballs out than play with OCTGN" etc
But the upside of all this is that we can get a bit of healthy competition going, isolated players will finally be able to get a game or two, seasoned players will get more exposure to different decks and opponents, we can all get to play with cards and combos that we dont actually own, and it all might even generate a bit of interest in the game, and rejuvenate waning enthusiasm.
Personally, I dont care what application gets used, so long as I get playing. I reckon there are others too who would be flexible like this.
So I'm offering to co-ordinate things if anyone else was interested in a wee bit of organised online play. The actual format (league / protracted tournament etc) would depend on final numbers.
So sound off People!! Let's have an expression of interest if you're into the whole idea, we'll see what sort of replies this post gets between now and the far side of the weekend, and we'll take it from there...

I do not care about the programm as long as i can face lots of different opponents. And i hope that other people will post here too, so we can finally start the first online tournament

Re:Calling all diehards , noobs and Usual Suspects... - 2008/04/22 19:59I could be motivated to try it, but I'd rather see my opponent! However, I realize that not everyone has that chance, and I'd like to support the game, so count me in.

Re:Calling all diehards , noobs and Usual Suspects... - 2008/05/11 12:14As I am back from my long absence and got really beat up by rom and Entity on OCTGN for several times now I'm getting used to the game mechanics again.
I'm on board!

Re:Calling all diehards , noobs and Usual Suspects - 2008/05/12 12:32Right so.... That makes 8 including myself. Any suggestions for a format? I'm reckoning that people will be able to manage one game a week definitely. So that means if we had "league" play where everyone plays everyone else, it'll run for nearly 2 months. If it was protracted tournie, it would be roughly half that timescale, including finals.
But I'm easy either way...============================ "There is always Hope...." - Elessar Telcontar ============================

Re:Calling all diehards , noobs and Usual Suspects - 2008/05/12 14:58I find all the current software offerings to be more trouble than they're worth to play with, so I won't be participating. But for my two cents...
I'd go with a standard tourney, at least at first... Keep it short. Interest will wane over time, and nothing will kill this faster than a fade that never lets it finish. Something that actually concludes will give everyone a better feeling about the whole thing.

Whatever sort of tournament you do, make it quick. 2 to 4 weeks is enough, any longer and it will die before it's finished.

Re:Calling all diehards , noobs and Usual Suspects - 2008/05/14 10:01It really depends on how many rounds people can manage in a week. I can do two per week without much of a headmelt, but i dont know if everyone's the same...============================ "There is always Hope...." - Elessar Telcontar ============================

Re:Calling all diehards , noobs and Usual Suspects - 2008/05/14 12:08I agree that something short spanned would be better. TZ differences will be tricky but we should be able to find something that works...
