The third annual EVE Fan Fest was held during the weekend, and on Friday we had the first Fan Fest CCG Championship. In the finals we had none other than Ian O'Brien (Calmdown), author of the first article of this site, and Pierre Malherbaud, winner of the $10,000 Gen Con Tournament. Both players are veteran card gamers, and the final games were incredibly close and exciting.
Pierre was playing a Gallente deck full of cheap frigates and shield boost cards like
Hired Enforcers and
Stubborn Mechanic, which he has dubbed the "Not Really Balanced Nor Funny Aggro Deck." Ian was also playing a very aggressive deck, but his focused more on abusing
Insurance Fraud with a lot of damage dealing news cards. The first game went to Pierre, but Ian came back and took the second, resulting in a tense third round. Ian had a very nice beginning and seemed to have the upper hand, but when he attacked Pierre's starbase with what could only be described as overwhelming force, Pierre played 2 copies of
Veteran's Premature Retirement, sending two of Ian's biggest ships back to his hand. Ian never recovered and Pierre won the game a few turns later.
These are the final standing of the tournament:
1. Pierre Malherbaud
2. Ian O'Brien
3-4. Einar Þór Ívarsson Berndsen
3-4. Emilie Goldberg
5-8. Alexander Kohlman
5-8. Kristjan Lindberg
5-8. Martin Ellis
5-8. Kim Gisle Tronsmo
Artwork based on the winner's likeness will be created for use on a card in the upcoming CCG expansion.
